Past students from the academy have gained many admirable awards over the years.
These floors have been graced by 2 winners of the Schwarzkopf Hairdresser of the Year Award in 1991 and 1993.

- 20 placing's including 5 "FIRSTS" at Regional Competitions
- 2 out of 4 Canterbury representatives at National Supreme Awards.
- 1995
- 2 "FIRSTS", 8 "SECONDS", and 16 placing's in all at the Regional Competitions.
- Nominated Merit Award at Schwarzkopf Hairdresser of the Year
- Merit Award at LOREAL Colour Trophy.
- 1990
- 13 out of 14 "FIRSTS" at the Regional Competitions.
In its inaugural year the Ruben Blades Academy scooped the pool at the Regional Competitions. Academy proteges gained first, second and third placing's in their respective events. One student achieved third place in the open colour event competing against 40 of the South Island's best colourists. An inspiring success story after just 15 weeks in the course.
