Assessment
All assessment procedures are based on the ability to achieve the desired results, both theoretically and practically, within the commercially specified time frame.
The standards of the desired result is that which is according to the Industry
(internationally and nationally), for the purpose of working in a commercial
hairdressing salon.
The Academy will conduct internal assessments on the following areas:
- Student level of skills
- Student level of knowledge
- Professional skills
All units are based on competency based training principles, ie by agreed learning
outcomes per unit. These outcomes will be measured both on and off the job. Students
will need to reach appropriate knowledge and skill levels in a unit which is a
prerequisite for other units.
All examinations and assignments will be set in accordance with I.T.O. requirements
in conjunction with industry accepted texts and references.
Assessments are in a three step process:
- Supportive evidence
- Formative assessment (informal)
- Summative assessment (formal)
Summative being the allocation of credits and a comptent/not yet competent in the unit.
Because of a time restriction Ruben Blades has a
strict policy in the number of attempts a student has at passing the summmative assessment
for a particular unit. The number of attempts is 3 maximum (through dedication and
commitment these units are obtainable in one attempt at a summative assessment), if a
student still cannot gain the necessary skills to achieve this, one on one tutor workshops
are available after Academy hours and at the student's expense. This policy is set so as
not to disadvantage the students who are comptetent in a particular unit and are ready
to move on.
Ruben Blades Academy has definite evaluation policies
to ensure that the student is given maximum attention and resources that will lead to student
success. These evaluation policies include both evaluation of the course programme and the
teaching ability/delivery of the educators. On a continual basis the student is also evaluated
both throughout the course and off-site practical work based components.
Ruben Blades Academy student leaves the Academy with
an assessment summary of their own personal hairdressing achievements.
All education will be in small class workshop and tutorial style to nominal hour guidelines
per unit, which allows for a degree of self-pacing learning. This is because we have
determined the core competencies will be learned by students and failure will be minimised.
Some examples of this are:
- Student self-pace learning
- Tutor directed learning
- Creative learning and external learning techniques
- Role plays
- Demonstrations
- External specialists directed learning
